Assisted suicide bill:

We have been sent the following by the Bishops’ Conference:

The important vote for all MPs on the assisted suicide legislation, known as the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, is likely to take place on25th April.

The charity Right to Life UK has a simple online mechanism to allow people to contact their Member of Parliament and it only takes a few moments to submit a message to ask an MP to stop assisted suicide being rushed into law. It can be accessed here: https://righttolife.org.uk/asvote.

Also, to let you know, Right to Life is distributing postcards to parishes for the lay faithful to send to their MPs on this subject.

A range of further resources on opposing assisted suicide is available here: https://www.cbcew.org.uk/opposing-assisted-suicide/

Lenten Almsgiving and food donations to SVP run Food Pantry in Ebbw Vale:

Abergavenny SVP are collecting donations of food and toiletries for the food pantry at All Saints RC School Ebbw Vale that is in desperate need of supplies for their many needy families. If items are brought to the church, they can be transported to the pantry on a weekly basis (Paul Venkort has kindly offered to do this). If you wish to leave any goods mid-week for Paul you can always leave in the confessional for safe keeping until Paul collects each Sunday. Items such as breakfast cereal, tinned food (inc. fruit and rice pudding etc..), jams. pasta, long life milk, squash, vegetable oil, toiletries, sanitary products, washing powder and washing up liquid.

You could also fill a jar with coins for them during Lent if you can. This can then be donated directly to the food pantry for their purchase of fresh food for their beneficiaries. Please contact Paul for further details:

Intercessions Prayer Board:

An intercessions prayer board has been created for prayer requests to Our Lady.

The board will be displayed on Our Lady's Altar and parishioners are invited to use the 'Post it' notes and drawing pins provided to add the prayers to the board.

Different coloured post it notes will be used each week and on Sunday the board will be taken up to the Offertory and blessed by Canon Paul.

For private prayers the secure prayer box is still available at the back of the church near the entrance or post into the Private Prayer envelope on the intercessions board on Our Lady’s altar.

Livestream:

If you can’t be with us at Mass, remember you can always listen and watch via the livestream pages of the website - this is not a recording, it is simply a live camera all the time and when Mass is being said, Canon Paul turns on the sound element so you can hear proceedings. Feedback is that the sound comes through clearly for those who attend virtually.

Thanksgiving Service:

The Welsh Government is helping to organise a thanksgiving service for the 80th anniversary of VE-Day.

They are looking to invite veterans of the Second World War and also those who worked on the Home Front and Land Army etc. Their contribution and memories are just as important as those who fought in the war and they would very much like to reflect this at the service.

Do you know anyone who was alive at that time and would be interested and able to attend the Service in Cardiff? The service is at 6.00pm on Wednesday 7May at Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff.

Jubilee Year of Hope:

The Holy Father has decided that 2025 will be a year of Jubilee, something which happens every 25  years.  The theme is “Pilgrims of Hope”.

“In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the future may bring… may the Jubilee be an opportunity to be renewed in hope.”
Pope Francis,

Our Church is a designated Pilgrim Church during this year and we hope to welcome many visitors.

ABOUT US

Our recently restored church sits on Porthycarne Street. Please visit the cemetery behind which is a place of calmness and contemplation. You may rest on the benches and enjoy our bee friendly planting scheme. Or offer a prayer to the beautiful statue of Our Lady.

The church is open from 9am to 4.30 pm in the winter months for prayer and for visitors.

Please take the time to visit our shrine upstairs to St David Lewis which holds a relic (a piece of cloth dipped into his blood at his execution as the last Welsh martyr in 1679, which happened around 300 yards form our church). There are also paintings of St David Lewis and St Francis Xavier.

Leaflets explaining the shrine and church are available.
